Non-Discrimination Policy

Catholic schools of the Diocese of Monterey, mindful of their mission to be witnesses to the love of Christ for all, admit students of any race, color, national and/or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to the school.

Catholic schools of the Diocese of Monterey do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and/or ethnic origin, age, sex or disability in administration of their educational policies, scholarship programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.

While Catholic schools of the Diocese of Monterey do not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them.

Entrance Requirements for New Applicants

  1. Satisfactory academic progress in previous school(s) (documented by report cards/standardized test scores).
  2. Recommendation from current teacher and/or principal.
  3. Indication of good character and behavior patterns which would not be a disruptive influence in the school, classroom or playground.
  4. Copies of birth, Baptismal and First Communion certificates for Catholic students (Grade 3 and above); birth certificates for non-Catholic students.
  5. Immunization records and physical exam record, according to state guidelines.
  6. Application and Registration fees paid.

N.B. Kindergarten students must be a minimum of five years of age by December 2; first grade students must be a minimum of six years by December 2.

Criteria for Acceptance of New Students

Acceptance in all grades is based upon a point system, which includes religious affiliation, academic promise, teacher recommendation and family association with the school. "Wait Lists" are established for each grade level as classes become full.  All students, Grade 1-8 are admitted on academic and behavioral probation for one trimester.  At the discretion of the principal, a longer probationary period may be required.

Criteria for Acceptance of Returning Students

Students who voluntarily transfer or withdraw from Good Shepherd may not be considered for re-entry into the school.  Exceptions are made based upon the current academic status of the student, determined by report cards for last 2 years, standardized testing for last 2 years, teacher recommendation and Good Shepherd staff assessment of grade level performance as well as the terms under which the student withdrew from attending Good Shepherd.   A Student Academic/Behavior Contract may be drawn up.

Admissions Policy

 Good Shepherd Catholic School is a Catholic elementary and junior high school dedicated to the education of all who:

  • desire to learn more about God and are willing to participate in the faith community;
  • demonstrate – through former school records, entrance testing, and student/parent interview(s) an ability to achieve academically and socially within our curriculum;
  • support the mission, philosophy, goals, objectives and rules of the school.

Registration opens in February.  Catholic students will be considered first if registration is completed by the end of April, and the above criteria are met.  New students (applying for grades 2 – 7) will be screened in mid-March.  Screening for kindergarten and first grade applicants will be scheduled individually.  Applications received at other than normal registration periods will be considered on the basis of the above criteria and space available.

Acceptance of a student into Good Shepherd Catholic School means that the family is also accepted into the school community.  Students and their families are expected to contribute to the building of the Catholic community at the school.  Therefore, actions by a parent/legal guardian/family member which are or could be destructive to the community atmosphere or contrary to the principles of Christian living may be cause for the expulsion of a student(s).

Application Form

A student will not be considered for admission until the school has received a complete application packet, which includes the following:

All applicants need

  1. Completed Application (two-sided document)
  2. Application fee of $55.00
  3. Birth Certificate
  4. Current immunizations
  5. Baptismal Certificate (Catholics)

Students applying for Grades 1-8 need

    1. Copies of Report Cards for last 2 years.
    2. Copies of any Standardized Tests for the last 2 years.
    3. Teacher/Principal recommendation.
