Kudos

... from Tom O'Brien to all the children at Good Shepherd: "My thanks for the wonderful card you made for my ordination. The ordination day was a glorious day, and I know that the prayers and best wishes of the staff and students at Good Shepherd had much to do with that great day."

... to the Fifth Grade students for their "Soles for Souls" campaign. Their goal had been to collect 85 pairs of shoes to donate, but they collected 238 pairs! This was 290 percent of their overall goal. Congratulations!

(Please note that "Kudos" may be written and submitted by any parent, staff, student, or community member to recognize the outstanding service that so many give to our community. If you'd like to submit recognition to be written in the Ram at any time during the year, please send an email to Arefa Chavarria and write "Kudos for Ram" in the subject line.)

Celebrate

Anna Erickson, Angel Cabrera and Emily DeFrancesco (from left) are festively dressed as they take part in Good Shepherd's celebration of Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") Thursday at school. (Normally celebrated on May 5, that is a Saturday — no school — and Friday is the bishop's golf tournament.)

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is called El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla). The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.

In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day — the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico — which is actually celebrated on September 16.

Shepherd Spotlight

Jackson is helpful, friendly and has a zest for life that is apparent to everyone. He is quick to volunteer to provide assistance to his teacher and the staff at SEP. He brings in sports equipment, helps with snack, helps clean the room and provides support in many ways. Jackson has developed special relationships with students in and outside of his own class. He plays with younger students making sure that they are included and also fits in well with older students. Jackson has fun and makes the best of any and all situations. He has a good attitude, is self motivated and enjoys life. Thank you and Congratulations Jack!

Welcome to Good Shepherd

Good Shepherd Catholic School, a fully accredited PS through 8th grade, is located in the heart of Santa Cruz County. Within the context of Christian values, parents and teachers, like a family, work together towards a common goal. By striving for excellence, Good Shepherd gives students the life-long skills of mind and heart required for self-esteem and service to others. Good Shepherd is supported by the parishes of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Resurrection, and St. Joseph’s and falls under the auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Monterey.

Prospective families may visit the school on Thursdays from 8 to 10 a.m. This time includes our school-wide assembly and the chance to observe specialty classes such as music, Spanish, and computers.

Tuition is made affordable through the efforts of fundraising and community contributions.  To see ways that you can give to the school, please visit the “Fundraising” link on the school’s homepage.  The entire community of Good Shepherd Catholic School thanks you for your support as we work towards educating the whole child with faith in the future.
